What is NABIF?
NABIF stands for Northern Acquired Brain Injury Forum.
We are a group of individuals and organisations who have an interest in Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) or who provide services to individuals with ABI and their families.
Those individuals and organisations are drawn from a wide cross-section of the public and private sector, predominantly health and social care professionals.
What is ABI?
Acquired Brain Injury is non-degenerative injury to the brain that has occurred since birth. It can be caused by an external physical force or by metabolic derangement. The term 'acquired brain injury' includes traumatic brain injuries - such as open or closed head injuries-, or non-traumatic brain injuries - such as those caused by strokes and other vascular accidents, tumours, infectious diseases, hypoxia, metabolic disorders (e.g. liver and kidney diseases or diabetic coma) and toxic products taken into the body through inhalation or ingestion.
Stephen McAleese
We were deeply saddened by the death of Stephen McAleese on Christmas Eve. He died peacefully in his sleep whilst a crew member on the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s tall ship Tenacious as it sailed for the Caribbean. Sailing tall ships was a passion for Stephen.
Stephen was an active member of NABIF from its inception and played an important role on the Steering Group. He was also on the Executive Committee of the United Kingdom Acquired Brain Injury Forum and played a role in the development of the North West ABIF. He was an inspiration to all those who knew him and a good friend to many. He will be sorely missed.
